Australia ‘a’ squad

Australia ‘a’ is playing the Pakistani ‘a’ side this winter.

It is up in Townsville, so they don’t really have winter up there.

The squad is full of new names, some of which haven’t even played a full year of shield cricket.

Fair to say it isn’t really an ‘a’ squad, but a development squad.

There is no Hodge, Symonds, Harris, Nannes, Noffke, McGain, or Magoffin in it.

In the squad are some odd and surprising selections.

Ryan Broad: Whose career average of 35 in first class cricket doesn’t really turn me on.

Jon Holland: Victoria’s replacement for the injured and nationally indisposed Bryce McGain, sure he shows promise, but perhaps an ‘a’ gig is too much praise for little actual wickets.

Burt Cockley: Still hardly plays for NSWales, but everyone keeps talking him up.

Moises Henriques: All he needs is a hamstring injury and he is the new Shane Watson.

But my favourite selection has to be Shaun Tait.

Now we know why he was being held back from the IPL, because he had ‘a’ one day games (wasn’t picked for the four day cricket) to play.

Cameron White (Victoria, captain), Adam Voges (WA, vice-captain), George Bailey (Tasmania), Doug Bollinger (NSW), Ryan Broad (Queensland), Burt Cockley (NSW), Callum Ferguson (South Australia), Brett Geeves (Tasmania), Moises Henriques (NSW), Jon Holland (Victoria), Michael Klinger (South Australia), Jason Krejza (Tasmania), Shaun Marsh (WA), Clint McKay (Victoria), Tim Paine (Tasmania), Shaun Tait (South Australia), David Warner (NSW).

The insignificant current Australian players of the IPL

Just to clarify, the word current means players who haven’t retired from national duty.

Moises Henriques – Kolkata
38 runs @ av 19 sr 95 hs 30*
2 wickets @ 53 econ 8.79 bb 1/32

No one could quite understand how he kept getting a game, or the new ball. Is a very talented young kid, but maybe, just maybe, he should perform at the level below before he is given an opportunity.

David Hussey – Kolkata
98 runs @ av 24 sr 166 hs 43
0 wickets econ 8.5

Came late onto a ship that had already sunk, and decided to swing away. Looked in top touch, but kept getting out after amazing starts. Had a way better strike rate than McCullum or Gayle.

Lee Carseldine – Rajasthan
81 runs @ av 20.25 sr 119 hs 39
1 wicket @ 6 econ 6 bb 1/6

Came in first game and just smacked the ball everywhere when no one else could get the ball off the square, sadly that was about all he did in the tournament. Interestingly only bowled one over.

Rob Quiney - Rajasthan
103 runs @ av 14.7 sr 100.98 hs 51

Hit his first ball in the IPL for 6, then went out. Only really got two starts, and showed glimpses of his talent, but good spinners slowed him down or got him out. Hopefully he has learnt some good lessons, and will be able to score more consistently for Victoria.

Shane Harwood – Rajasthan
9 runs (no outs) sr 62 hs 6*
3 wickets @ 24.3 econ 7.30 bb 2/25

Only played 3 games, but did look dangerous. Rajasthan were more worried with making runs so he and Morne spent most of their time on the bench.

Luke Ronchi – Mumbai Indians
0 runs from 1 game

Sachin went into panic mode about half way through the tournament and threw Luke one game. He was run out for a duck.

Simon Katich – Punjab
145 runs @ av 16 sr 123 hs 50

His 50 was sensational, as good as I have seen the krab time the ball, but struggled other than that. 2020 really wasn’t made for him, and had his coach not been Moody, I doubt he would played too often.

George Bailey – Chennai
45 runs @ av 22.5 sr 115 hs 30

In both of his innings he looked in top form, and in both of them he ran himself out. The good news was smilin’ George looked completely at home at this level of cricket.

Andrew McDonald - Delhi
3 runs @ av 3 sr 75 hs 3
0 wickets (3 overs) econ 7.33 bb 0/22

Only played the one game when Delhi were resting players, and got a sensational Yorker from Anil Kumble.

Luke Pomersbach – Punjab
41 runs @ av 10.25 sr 83 hs 26

Looked out of touch, and small. When Luke is at his best he looks like a Hayden type bully, here he looked like a mouse imitating a flea.

Australia Moises up

“I probably haven’t had the year that I wanted personally and been a bit inconsistent with the bat and ball and to have this opportunity now, it’s amazing,”

Moises Henriques

That is what latest Australian squad member, Moises Henriques said.

I liek Moises, but his performacnes have been ordinary.

You know who hasn’t?

Dirty Dirk Nannes.

He is the best 2020 bowler in Australia, and yet again he has been left out.

For a NSWelshman with crap form.

Could you imagine a 22 year old from Tasmania or South Australia speaking at a press conference and saying they are surprised to be picked cause their form has been ordinary?

No, cause they wouldnt be picked.

Callum Ferguson has to set pitches aligjt to get nocited, and Dirty Dirk demolishes whole stadiums, and is still ignored.

Moises just gets picked.

The baby blues win Mott’s love

The Kiwi’s eventually lost their warm up game.

NSWales have only got first innings points from one game in the shield this year.

But they closed New Zealand out with their worst team in the year and their second youngest of all time.

You can’t help but think this result is going to be a lot more important for NSWales than New Zealand.

The Kiwis will go on to play a test match next week and wont care.

But for NSWales this game means quite a lot.

Moises Enriques finally stepped up with bat and ball.

Josh Hazelwood showed he can bowl.

Steven Smith took a few wickets and made a lot of runs.

And Phillip Hughes yet again tried to jump Shaun Marsh.

All these guys are 21 and under.

A gun opening batsman, a young tall quick, and two all rounders.

There aren’t many teams in the world that don’t want that sort of combination.

Bloody NSWales.

Piri Piri Kid Rocks Kiwis (a lot of ‘I’s in that)

Moises Enriques, Portugal’s greatest ever cricketer, rocked the Kiwis on day three of their match.

The poor kiwis are having a bit of a rough time of it at the moment.

Embarrassed in the first innings, ground down to the nub during NSWales innings, then they go out to bat and a 21 year old runs through them like butter.

At least he is not a teenager.

The good news is no Australian player is going to be that young.

Ever.

Moises who was just starting to push the ‘promising’ tags a bit far, has been given a lot of responsibility by NSWales, they either believe him to be some sort of Portuguese Jesus, or they have no one else.

I think it’s both.

This year Mott has made him bat in the top order and take the new ball.

Moises often flirts with success, but no climaxs so far, but one big hundred and another 5 for and his baggy green will coming very soon.

Talking about Jesus, Daniel Vettori is way nerdier, but is also New Zealand’s new saviour.

When did that happen?

Before he was captain he was just a bowler and a handy batsman.

Now he is a nerdy super alpha dog who dominates their batting and their bowling.

Or the rest have just stopped trying.

The Sheffield Shield, brought to you by a soggy breakfast: NSW

Time for my state cricket round up.

This may be the last year I can do one with any authority,

We’ll start wit the reigning champs.

NSWales, the speedblitz blues

Players that won’t be available for large parts of the season.

Bollinger, Bracken, Clark, Clarke, Haddin, Jacques, Katich, and Lee.

That is a fair list, and looking at the “a” team, there are a bunch more in the wings.

What have they got left, youth, youth, and yup, youth.

Last year I though there youth was ordinary and wouldn’t make much of a splash, they did, bastards.

The Reigning Shield Champions seem to have an uphill battle to do the same.

This year they will need that youth to kick on either further as Haddin, Katich and Bollinger will be available far less.

Leadership

Katich is a huge loss, not just for batting, but he was the steel, but the captaincy, when you have a young team you need a captain who can bring them together, but he will be there and thereabouts for Australia, and may miss large portions of the season.

Whoever has the captaincy for the games Katich is not available will be the key, I would say they would go with Thornely, Daniel Smith, Mail or Ed Cowan.

Bowling

With their top 4 bowlers all busy, Cameron and Henriques will have to take a lot of wickets.

Henriques is the highest rated young player since Michael Clarke, but so far he hasn’t done much other than look impressive.

Beau Casson will be trying to prove he is the number one spinner in Australia, which he isn’t, but with this bowling attack, he should get a lot of overs.

Batting

Hard to see where the runs are coming from. Mail, Cowan and Thornley are experienced, but none of these players are top flight state batsmen.

The class would appear to come from Hughes and Khawaja. Neither have the experience, but they do look like the way forward.

Khawaja will also provide Australian writers the opportunity to call him wristy which is nice.

Henriques, Casson and Steve Smith are all supposed to be all rounders, and they will have to make a few runs between them.

Long in the tooth

The Mail Man may be paying his last season. Should get a game for the first half of the year, but when the young bucks start circling, he is the one Matthew Nicholson and the other selectors may get rid of. Although Nicholson probably thinks 30 is young.

Ready to shed the nappies

Steven Smith is the highest rated youngster since Moises Henriques, sorry couldn’t help myself. Played in a few 2020 games last year and tripped over wickets with his leg spin. He may be the Cameron White, Cameron White never proved to be, a genuine top six batsman who can bowl.

Nostradamus

Shield

3rd to 4th.

One dayers

2nd to 3rd.

2020

Last, they never take this shit seriously.

The rub

They is young, and held in high regard, but can they play?

The Ryan Gosling side

Moises, the biblical spelling mistake of the next generation

While everyone was going on about barramundigate something happened.

Another NSWelshman with no real performances behind him leap frogged several hopefuls and made it to the Australian squad.

Moises Enriques is his name.

He is the new Shane Watson, except made of oak, not ply wood.

So get used to his name.

This time he was probably picked because he was the highest rated of the academy kids.

All the A boys in India, and probably every other Australian cricketer in England, he was one of the few left.

With a List A batting average of 18 and a bowling average of 50 it still must annoy some other domestic players.

Some of whom may have even considered coming home from some Lancashire league type thing just to train with the national team.

The selectors however probably thought that as he was already up north it was easier.

The reason this is a big deal, has less to do with him being Portugese, and more because the selectors have been itching to get him in there.

Moises is very much a product of the NSWales brown bag soceity, when he was a rookie at the Speedblitz blues Trevor Hohns was already kissing his knuckles and licking out his toe sweat.

I think they boy is promising, but my question is, would he have got the same golden treatment if he was from Western Australia or Victoria?

If he can really play, then I am all for him, but if we have to play him for 5 years like we did for Shane Watson, because of our Keith Miller syndrome, then I will cut the boy down at every oppurtunity.

And because he is from NSWales, i will really enjoy it.

kittens mauled by virgins

Bangladesh is in Australia.

And so far this is no golden reunion tour for Jamie Siddons.

The kittens have been playing the Australian academy XI.

3 losses and one victory is probably not what you need before playing Australia, even if it’s A list players are all having a holiday.

The academy side is a team of youngish blokes who at best are fringe state players, and at worst are under 19 Australian representatives.

Some of these players have already done well domestically with limited opportunities.

Here are there stories…

Matthew Wade (19) Vic– Leap frogged Crosthwaite for Victoria’s keeping job, but his batting fell away at the end of the year and his glove work always made me nervous. Can bat, but is treacle like.

Moises Henriques (21) Nsw– Like Shane Watson, only could be the real deal. Already has selectors with erections everywhere. No one can tell if he is a bowler or a batsman, and not in the crap way like most all rounders. Is the 438th New Keith Miller.

Peter Forrest (22) Nsw – top order batsman already on the tour for Australia A, I’m not a huge fan, but the right people seem to be.

Theo Doropoulos (23) Wa – Hard hitting middle order player who has already made an impact or two at the top level already. Can bowl medium pace as well, but it’s the hitting that people have noticed. Also has a great name for commentators.

Usman Khawaja (21) Nsw – Against Victoria in full flight made a 90 odd on debut in a tight contest. So far against Bangladesh he has made them his bitches. Born in Pakistan, raised in Australia.

Liam Davis (24) Wa – Made a hundred on debut to stop Douggie Bollinger from a complete decimation of WA this year. Looks like a standard nuggety West Australian type batsman, see Justin Langer, or Greg Shipperd.

Steven Smith (19) Nsw – Should be ready to take over from Bryce McGain as Australian leg spinner in 3 years time. Also can bat, in 3 boiwls in the 2020 took 9 wickets. I give him the Jrod early seal of approval, bu reserve the right to revoke at any time.

That is just the players who have played at the top level.

There is also Michael Hill (19), from the northern suburbs of Melbourne.

He has yet to play for Victoria, but is tearing Bangladesh apart at the moment.

And being that he is from the northern suburbs predicting that he will become a champion is a easy prediction.

There are also other players yet to play at the top level, who aren’t from the northern suburbs.
