balls profile: VVS Laxman

Has the hands of a surgeon.  Actually, has the whole body of a surgeon and the hair of a mid level executive.  Couldn’t look less like a cricketer if he went out in a lab coat.  Considering his freakish natural attributes as a batsman, he has had a middling career.  Yes, he has been better than most, but so he should be, he’s VVS Laxman.  Showed against Australia that he could dissect a live animal and put it back together again while playing an inside out cover drive out of the rough from a leg spinner.  Considering his initials, it is lucky for him he went on to become a top test batsman, otherwise he could have been known as Very Very Shit Laxman.

Laxman never really gets bracketed with Dravid or Tendulkar or indeed Ganguly, but he has been as vital to India in the last decade as anyone.

  2. That man VVS should’ve accomplished a lot more. Too bad India didn’t play Australia all the time, instead they play Sri Lanka every week. That 167 in Sydney (2000) is one of the best counterattacking inning I have seen,. But the rest of the Indian team was so shit that all that Innings did was get VVS a new lease on life.

During the SL match, he hit this fabulous shot where flickde a ball from the offspinner through cover for a boundary. Check out the link “name that VVS Laxman shot”. This dude is so supremely gifted. He is as integral to India’s success in the last decade as Kumble, SRT, Dravid and Ganguly.

When he’s at his best, there’s no one else I’d rather watch. Not Tendulkar, not Lara, not Sehwag. Ok, so his numbers aren’t the greatest. Who gives a shit?

  4. If VVS was born a couple of decades ago, he would’ve been worshiped like a god and if not god, he surely would’ve been considered at par with a Gavaskar. Sad for him he has to bat in this era.

  6. The initials could also and have always meant ‘Very Very Special’!

You must profile Stuart Broad, as the blogger straightpoint anointed, the new and real God of Cricket. Omnipotent – nobody dare question him. Move over pretenders, Sachin and Viru.

  8. jogesh99 says:

Broad is England’s answer to Watson. Looks like England is going to win the ObnoxiousAshes stakes this time around, what with Ponting doing the un-aussie thing and playing the good fella. Why, he might even own up to a bump catch before he’s retired.
