Until today, the one thing missing from Sachin Tendulkar’s extensive cricketing portfolio was a proper world record, one that counted for most people.
Ok, so he’s scored more Test tons than anyone else. On the other hand, not one of those 47 hundreds has seen him pass 250. Granted, neither did Border or Waugh, but neither of them aspired to be regarded as the greatest Test batsman of all time.
And when you think of the greatest ODI batsmen of all time, you probably think of the power hitters, the Richardses, Jayasurias and Gilchrists of this world. But not the man who now holds that elusive record for a highest score – and in doing so made the first double hundred in ODI history, too. That latter point is no mean feat – there have been over a thousand more ODIs than Test matches, so it has taken almost as long for someone to make a 200 in ODI cricket as it took someone to make a 400 in the longest form of the game.
It was a very different kind of innings to Lara’s 400, too. That was a knock of pure tedium, one man selfishly grinding his way to a record total in a dead rubber against an attack which included Gareth Batty.
Tendulkar, on the other hand, faced the world’s number one bowler, opened the batting and brutalised an entire attack. It was the cricketing equivalent of shagging someone so long and so hard that you both know you are going to wake up sore in the morning, but keeping doing it because you’re having fun and you know that, in some sort of masochistic way, they are, too.
Whatever you might think of the man, this was one hell of an innings.
In my mind another useless stat

The only reason Sachin does not have a 250+ score in tests is because he is a selfless player. He has a 241* and a 248* not out which could have turned into higher scores if he had any partners left on the other end. He has solely supported a less than adequate Indian team for most of his career but now that he knows that he has better support around him and they are not going to collapse around him, he has started playing more freely and has come up with some beautiful innings like today. No wonder Sehwag calls Sachin his Guru.
To do what he did today, at his age and then coming back to field a full innings just proves the love for the game he has. Hats off to the little master.

I usually try not to get drawn into discussions about the greatest batsman, bowler etc. But I cannot help commenting that if someone does think Jayasuriya or Gilchrist is a better ODI batsman than Tendulkar, then he/she must not have followed the sport well enough. JRod, I think you are wrong when you say that Sachin is not the obvious name when you think of greatest ODI batsmen. There has been a deserved pinch of doubt in Test cricket where Brian Lara and Ricky Ponting (and Don himself) are the other shining lights. However, in ODIs I think the debate was long settled even before yesterday. There has been none – and looking at the trail of records I doubt if there would be one in near future – who has owned the format so completely. And this would have been true even if 200 hadn’t happened.
I am not a huge sachin fan. There have been just too many heartbreaks along the way. But the man deserves respect and admiration. I guess those who spew venom (alex, his ilk) at him forget the basic rule of nature – “if you spit at the sky, you are going to get it on your own face”.

Saeed Anwar needed a runner for most of the match. So lets not compare that innings with this master class. I liked the fact that Dhoni took the runs while he can and didn’t play for Sachin’s record. Considering SA has chased one 400+ score from Aussies it would have been criminal if India had let go of the throttle for Sachin’s record. Records are nice when it comes in winning matches.
