Shane Watson forgets he may have to bowl to Gayle again

I can never remember a time when Watson was mistaken for a Harvard professor.

But goading Chris Gayle, what sort of idiot does that?

He lost 15% of his match fee for it, but his real punishment should be opening the bowling anytime Australia plays the Windies.

There is no sound of the scream in this clip, count yourself lucky, as Watson’s roar was more like a camp version of the Wilhelm scream.

I can’t find it on youtube, but on one of the stump mics you can hear an Australian player say something like, “that was the best wicket celebration ever”.

Without seeing that player’s face, I’d like to think he was taking the piss.

  1. It’s a shame that part, or maybe all, of Brett Lee’s legacy on Australia’s fast bowlers is inspiring them to perform camp wicket celebrations as well as the increasingly camp fake throw at the batsman after fielding the ball in the follow through. Bollinger and Johnson are getting quite annoying with that. It’s spreading to the opposition too. If I were Benn, I’d be most embarrassed at that part of the exchange, the fake “I’m a badass” throw at Haddin, more than any other part of that incident from Thursday. It’s getting quite cliche.

  2. The MG says:

@Peter Della Penna – at least Benn’s a slow bowler, you don’t often see much physical aggression coming from them. Still, disgusted by the huge discrepancy in punishments handed out in this series. If Chris Broad usually spends his time off in the Caribbean, he might just need to find an allternate holiday destination or face a very hostile group of locals.

  3. Reisa says:

@ The MG- We’re eagerly anticipating his arrival!

Maybe Tim Neilsen & co. promised him a new Barbie if he got Gayle’s wicket. I have no other explanation for that totally effeminate ‘celebration’. Screams and girly jumps.

  4. Forbes says:

Let’s hope they spare us another “Oh, but he wears his heart on his sleeve … that’s just Shane and he loves to play for his country” line from whoever faces the press conference.
What a cringingly apalling reaction to a wicket that will hardly rank as one of Australia’s most important of this year, let alone of all time. Doubtless it was more to do with self-indulgence from a man desperate to be considered up there with the world’s best.
    What a tosser.

  5. alex says:

All the blogs link i see in this site is kind of CWB offsprings. Every one kind of copying cwb writing style now…lets fast forward 5 years,,,people will say JROD for president. :)

  6. alex says:

OH MY MY…there is not even one zilch of contact and the sound could have come from anywhere. Replay and hot spot show nothing there.

I am shocked with this whole ICC umpiring in australia. Pathetic at best.

I think it is 100% clear when you play aussies in australia marginal decisions and outragious decision favour aussies.

The best way to beat aussies is do not come to last ball or last 30 runs…Umpires like to favour aussies. Something weird going on with whole umpring in australia.

i really can’t figure out why billy gave it out on what basis. Sound? It could be anything. It is almost like umpires wants to wrap it and have a tea. Oh well.

  7. alex says:

Cricinfo say it is RIGHT CALL. FK them.

    Idiots.

It supposed to eliminate bad call not keep the status quo of making umpire look good when he makes bad call.

I am really serious here. if the ball is 1 feet away from the bat , will they give it out ?.

    THIS IS UTTER NONSENSE!.

INITIAL Bad call by billy bowden and UDRS rule support this nonsense?. for God sake It should be other way.

    Innocent until proven GUILTY.

UDRS supposed to check whether he is nicked. if you have no proof of nicked , it has to be OUT.

Cricinfo idiots say opposite why WI ask for review if they nicked…the whole idea of asking for review is batsman thought he did not nick the ball. AND technology quiet clearly say Roach did not nick the ball.

This whole ICC and Umpiring by all umpires in australia is awful.

  8. Forbes says:

Billy’s made a call based on a convincing appeal, and perhaps a noise which could have been anything. The overpaid TV umpire has not overturned the decision based on ridiculous constraints by which he is bound.
It’s worth considering also that by overturning the decision, they may have had to put up with another show of Australian players kicking the ground, animatedly challenging the umpires, and getting in the batsmen’s faces with poorly-chosen expletives … the game would have been further tarnished so the bigger picture won out on the day!

  9. alex says:

Probably. so they are afraid of aussie players temper tantrum. Hahahaha.

Anyway my whole idea of UDRS is INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY.

I understand this decision for LBW but not for catches. if there is 1feet distance from bat to ball , will the field umpire decision stand? how many inches? what angle?.

It is almost like unqualified person designed the whole UDRS. Fix it pls.

Jrod you fix UDRS!. You are the best judge. Innocent until proven guilty is the mantra.

  10. Naresha says:

Back to the Chris Broad – Shane Watson decision, I have to bring this up since I’m a racist Indian. Spot the difference:

I think Alex and jrod should take over the ICC and umpire all future games, and commentate and report them as well.

They obviously both far more qualified on cricket than anyone else on the planet.
jrod has special insight – and in-hearing – to all on-pitch events. He hears and sees things no-one else ever does, not even the players themselves. HE probably reads it in their minds. It’s his god-given gift to the cricket world.

Alex is a far more just, accurate and objective umpire than all those useless, bigoted tossers put in by the ICC. He could also have Australia banned permanently from being involved in any aspect of cricket in any part of the world, since all evil and nasty stuff emanates solely from them, and everyone – except alex, of course – is in their pay. Only he, and sometimes jrod, can see the true light.

jrod and alex for the ICC! THey should probably captain all the teams as well. Then they could both put their money where their considerable mouths are.

Then the cricket world would be a better, fairer place. amen.

  12. Fred says:

Shane Watson is an absolute idiot I hope he gets fined and suspended for 2 to 3 games.
Just because he is playing well of late, this does not entitle him to act like a raving lunatic .
In my opinion for Shane Watson to be regarded as a good cricketer he needs to play consistently well for 3 years not just in dibs and drabs, and drop this stupid up himself attitude

  13. alex says:

I think jrod comes with ideas like ian chappell do in a funny way. I am nobody. I am just babbling here to past time. alex do not exist. :p

he has the knack of showing the SPIN. CWB is no SPIN ZONE for cricket like cnn used to had the show called NO SPIN ZONE.

Some people have talent. Jrod really has in that he has uncanny way saying things in a funny way. I don’t have talent. I just babble. Time pass.

The whole review system there to remove bad calls. Infact current system of UDRS enforce the bad call. Badly designed.

I do not think we need match referee and third umpire. They are just making money for giving bad calls.

What we need though is Field umpire gets as much technology help like pocket video player that play the clips for him to see. We can help field umpires with all and every way and make him GOD. hahaha.

I still think what ever it is , it should Innocent until proven Guilty. That is all.

Australia is Visiting team’s graveyard when it comes to umpiring. I can’t figure out why umpires get flusteres and shivering in fear when aussies appeal and give OUT. I have no idea on that.

Ban Aussies?. Nope. They are the only team in the world who wants to win at any cost. That is only thing. We can’t see good competition if people want to improve stats and not to sacrifice stats for win.

So Aussies are must for cricket especially aussies winning attitude. SA do not show that much . England do not show that as much every time.

Umpires pissed of on his pants when aussies appeal. I do not what is in water in australia that makes umpire shiver when watson does war cry.

  14. Vim says:

I hope his pies get belted into the closest ocean by Gayle. Watson has no shame and the mentality of an over-excited 8 year old.

  15. Johnny Twoshoes says:

As a newer convert to cricket, I was unaware that M Johnson and D Bollinger have also feigned throwing the ball at opponents. Sorry, I don’t know the traditions, etc, but this is just going beyond the pale in my opinion. I’m someone who obviously believes the hype about ‘it’s just not cricket’ etc. but if I want non-sporting and boorish behaviour I can always watch football.

They should be sanctioned for this behaviour, in my ignorant punters’ mind. This behaviour is what turned me against S Benn but I didn’t realise it was becoming standard practise.

    Disgusted from Tunbridge Wells.

  16. JD says:

I was at a Christmas party last week and a 3 year old semi-retarded kid got a Thomas the Tank Engine from Santa. The kid did pretty much the exact same thing.

  17. Jamie64 says:

Fuck, can someone moderate alex’s comments. I have never read such utter crap in my life. And in every single thread. Aussie cheat, racists, umpires cheap for Aussie, ponting cheat, racism, Aussie bad, like devil, eat your children. India good, Aussie racism… ad nauseum.

Geez bloke, did an Australian kill your grandmother or something? Get a hobby or another interest.

btw, yep, Watson carried on like a goose.

  18. johnny says:

Watson is clearly battling with unresolved mental issues. It looks like a case of esteem abuse and/or a peroccupation with rejection which can boil over when adrenalin rises to maximum. It seems like getting a rare success over a player far superior to him was too much for Watson to handle. I don’t like the look of him as a long-term prospect for Australia. Already shown to be weak in terms of match fitness and a choker when approaching a century, the damaged psyche he carries with him on the field is by no means an asset for the Aussies. Cut him loose quick so he can receive therapy and maybe turn his life around.

  19. Fred says:

No presents from Santa this year for Watson , He has been a Bad Boy

  20. jogesh99 says:

Jamie, read Naresha’s two links. Read Broad’s comments about the two incidents. Understand the difference in language, in the choice of words – this isnt Alex ranting on the blog, these are the referee’s official pronouncement. Read that Hayden the epitome of Aussie manhood whined to the umpire. And then, since none of this will get through, continue to emulate him.

  21. Appreciating Critic says:

What a shame shane…my super sadistic dog is now itching to see you bowl to gayle

  22. jogesh99 says:

I raise you with Bhajjies somersaulting antics after dismissing Ponting last time we were over.
He dint get fined for that one did he?

  23. Jamie64 says:

jogesh, maybe not, but watson carried on like a pork chop. He probably should have been banned for a match for that one.

  24. jogesh99 says:

Jamie, I’m more concerned with Broad’s language. Its very revealing – its like hes a spokeman for the Aussie camp – ‘he ‘hard but fair but went slightly overboard because he loves his boggy green so’ routine. I think the current Aussie lot are much more decent than Broad and his outdated kind – who still cant handle an uppity native.

  25. Shane Watson is the most irritating player in cricket today. Any chance he could be dropped and Matthew Hayden brought back?
.-= The Village Cricketer´s last blog ..Swann leads the way playing resurrection cricket =-.

  26. Forbes says:

Wonderfully summed up, Johnny. I couldn’t have put it better myself.

Watson says he is not embarrassed, as it was simply “raw emotion”. Perhaps if he refrained from using all that “raw emotion” on himself next time he is not out overnight on a good score, he might convert instead of being “spent”!

  27. Chris says:

OK everyone, it is time to give Shane a break. You might all think what he did was over the top and quite frankly juvenille, but he had a very good reason. Chris Gayle started it!
