The umpiring has been shocking, and I don’t know if one team has had the worst of it, but your comment about the 4th umpire made me think about Darryl Harper in the WI-Eng series. He made some bizarre decisions even with the advantage of TV replays. I can only assume that the 4th ump gets so bored up in his box that he sits there with a litre of vodka and a huge bag of peanuts.
If the referral system comes in for all tests then I want to see the return of english umpires standing in all test in England. No-one ever seriously complained about their impartiality (unless we were moaning that they looked after the visitors too well) and they did a better job overall than the neutral panel.
There was also a fair point made yesterday by Holding about the referrals – Watson was technically out twice lbw to balls shaving the leg stump. If they’re always given then there will be some short test matches in future.
This pitch is nothing short of terrible. Even India in it’s worst moments didn’t produce wickets of this standard.
This is a test match the winner of which will win the ashes how dare you serve up this backyard track. We play on better wickets in C grade district in Australia and as silly as that seems it’s true.
The curator has produced wonderful wickets all county season therefore something is wrong here.
If this ever happened in Australia I would never go to another match. I also know it would never happen. There really is only one conclusion we can make,
“this wicket signifies the day the last gentleman left English cricket”.

I ain’t convinced it’s a good idea.
